Welcome to all of our Band/Orchestra/Color Guard families!
• This past week was a rather easy week, with the AP Music Theory final given, the Band performed at the lunchtime Senior’s Next Steps assembly on Thursday, and we had auditions for about 10 more APA Orchestra potential students.
• This next week has several performances: select APA Piano students perform at the City of HB Rose Ceremony Wednesday, the Wind Ensemble at the HBHS Tower Awards Ceremony Wednesday night, and our Jazz Cabaret on Friday night! Our APA schedule is modified again, so please check it out.

• The pit orchestra for APA’s fall production of Newsies is a nominated candidate for the Jimmy Awards also! We are nominated in Southern California as part of the national awards. Congrats!

BAND:
• Thanks for everyone that played at the Seniors Next Steps assembly on Thursday. Our last assembly of the year!
• Wednesday evening is the annual HBHS Tower Awards ceremony, honoring select top students in every subject area. The Wind Ensemble performs before and during this ceremony. See the schedule above. Concert dress. Nominees may dress up differently if desired.
• Leadership interviews will be scheduled starting next week for those that submitted their applications for next year. Scheduling will be set differently this year, but remember: you are auditioning always.
• Students selected for leadership positions of section lieutenants, band council, and drum major will be expected to attend the California Leadership Academy sessions again this year. It will be June 30-July 2 at Vanguard University.
• All current Wind Ensemble and Color Guard members will be performing at the City of Huntington Beach Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday at Pier Plaza. Either meet at HBHS at 9:30, or Pier Plaza north of the pier at 10:30. We begin performing about 10:40, with the ceremony beginning at 11:00, and ending around 12:00. Wear black band t-shirts and blue jeans. This is a required performance.
• We will be participating in the City of Huntington Beach 4th of July Parade again this year! Participants include any/all current band and color guard members, as well as incoming 8th graders and enthusiastic alumni. Rehearsals will be evenings June 27-30, and afternoon July 1. Detailed schedules will be posted soon.
ORCHESTRA:
• Thanks to the students, primarily strings, that performed as part of MMET’s RetroFest concert. You represented our department well. And had fun.
• This week’s schedule is modified again, due to SBAC testing at HBHS, specialist availability and performances. There will be no Academics 1 nor strings on Tuesday.
• Students preparing for the Seniors+ Recital may meet and use practice rooms/hallways to rehearse if desired.
• Those students that have not regularly attended Academics classes this year will be required to complete an Academics X project by finals week. These packets are available in M-1.
JAZZ BANDS:
• We’re preparing for our annual Jazz Cabaret on Friday! Both bands will perform. We also encourage alunmi to join the Big Band for the final set, which will include an open dance floor for those that want to join us in the fun. We ask for a $5 donation for adult admission. Students are free.
• This will be in the Student Center. Set-up (all jazz students help) at 5:00, then a quick rehearsal/sound check at 6:00. We’ll open the doors about 6:30. The show begins at 7:00, and will finish around 8:30. We will need to strike the stage/room/instruments after.
• Same dress as the jazz festivals. Big Band members should return their clothes/shoes to the uniform room after the show.
• The Jazz Big Band has rehearsals scheduled on Monday, Tuesday , and Thursday to help prepare for the Cabaret. Please plan on these rehearsals.
DRUM LINE:
• We will have another practice session on Monday 6:00-8:00. This is a required class session for all current DL members.
• The next class clinics will be held Friday 6/2 3:30-5:00.
• These sessions are STRONGLY encouraged for ALL percussion students – battery and pit – planning on participating in Marching Band next Fall, as we will be working on developing our technique and determining instrument assignments.
AP MUSIC THEORY:
• Now that the AP exam and our final exam is finished, we will begin working on our music composition projects until the end of the year. These are fun projects where we will demonstrate our theory and creative skills.
• Please bring back our Music Theory textbooks Monday. These books are returned to Mr. G. Unreturned books will cause you to get charged for your book, and they are NOT cheap. Please remember to bring your book to class.
COLOR GUARD:
• All current Wind Ensemble and Color Guard members will be performing at the City of Huntington Beach Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday at Pier Plaza. Either meet at HBHS at 9:30, or Pier Plaza north of the pier at 10:30. We begin performing about 10:40. Dress will be per Ms. Rhonda.
