EVERYONE:
Thanks to all the families that helped last week with Fanfare and the Drum Line championships! Both events went very smoothly.
• Just a reminder of our program’s policy for leaving early from an event off campus: Mr. G should receive a note or email from the student’s parent/guardian in advance – at least one day before the event, and the student and parent need to check out with Mr. G in person when leaving. I know this may seem unnecessary or inconvenient to some, but it is for the protection of our students and our program. Thanks for cooperating.

BAND:
• Great job with the Prom Assembly – very enthusiastic performance.
Seniors – there is a gold Senior Graduation Information sheet you are requested to fill out and return to Mr. G this week. Thanks!
Freshmen, we will be administering the Ninth Grade Physical Fitness Testing this Friday 5/5 during 6th period. Please dress accordingly (you may change at the beginning of class). Leadership will help Mr. G with this.
The test includes:
1 mile run/walk (9 1/2 minutes or better)
curl-ups (24)
trunk lift (9)
push-ups (14 guys/7 girls)
flexibility (touch fingers behind back)
Let’s do our best, and maybe even have some fun.
Leadership 23-24 applications will be available soon, probably next week. There will be interviews late May, but remember: you are auditioning always.

ORCHESTRA:
Terrific performances for FANFARE last week! We’ve received many positive comments. Also, thanks for doing a great job with the logistics.
• Our schedule will be different the next few weeks, as we prioritize different things. This week and next week’s schedules are minimal due to AP testing. Most sessions will be masterclasses and/or reading sessions. Academics returns.
Pianos are all together.
Seniors are asked to complete the gold Senior Graduation Information form available in M-1 and return it to Mr. G this week. Additionally, APA requests you complete similar information by Monday 5/1 at this site: https://hbapa.online/seniors
• We are hoping all seniors (and some others) will participate in our Seniors+ Recital scheduled for Tuesday, May 30th at 7:00pm. Show off your skills, and have some fun. Solos, duets, ensembles, or ? are all encouraged. Sign-up forms will be available soon.
• Next week we will include Reading Band in our schedule. This is for ALL wind and percussion students. We will sight read some fun music.
• Several wind and string students will be playing in the MMET show coming up. Rehearsals are not scheduled thru Mr. G, so they will not appear on this blog.

JAZZ BANDS:
Check the schedule carefully, as we were able to add rehearsals this week, including on Tuesday and Thursday. Let’s get prepped for the upcoming festivals.
• The dress expectations for the performances coming up is this:
Jazz Lab Band:
black over black, dress clothes
guys wear ties (long, not bow) can be “fun”
black shoes – no sandals
Jazz Big Band:
maroon jazz uniforms (hopefully) and shoes?
guys: black dress pants/shoes/socks
girls: black tank/camisole top/pants or skirt/shoes
Friday’s District Jazz Festival is at 7:00 at Ocean View HS. It’d be best if we met at HBHS to coordinate rides. See the times above. It’s free for audience.
Saturday’s Coronado Jazz Fest is a full day! Please see the schedule above. An info sheet will also be passed out at rehearsals. We are asking everyone to pay $30 for the dinner at The Old Spaghetti Factory after the festival. This is always a fun social event. Please bring in cash or check to OMG and give to Mr. G early this week (Monday?). Let Mr. G know if this is not affordable to you/your family at this time. Let’s make this a fun event, as it has been in past years!
Thanks to all the parents volunteering to drive for these events. All drivers should fill out a HBHS Parent Volunteer form, if you haven’t already this year. Mr. G has them, or from Teri Moore, VIP coordinator in the HBHS office.
• Next week we will be participating in the Costa Mesa Jazz Festival, which includes clinics and masterclasses, and a lunch time jam session. Plan on 8:30am-4:00.

DRUM LINE:
Terrific performance Saturday! We placed 4th!! Awesome! The year ended very weel – thanks to all that participated in this program this year!!
And thanks to all the parents that helped make things run so smooth! Especially the truck and car drivers that went above and beyond to make things happen so well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:
EVERYONE:

A HUGE THANKS to everyone that worked at the WGASC Championships on Saturday!! While there were fewer workers than hoped for, the students and parents that were there made it happen! A special thanks to the Band and Orchestra students and parents that worked multiple shift – some working the entire event – a 15+ hour day! Also appreciated to those that came to help out after/before other events they had (MUN, sports, family). And to our Color Guard members/parents that helped out before/after their performance in Long Beach. Everyone’s commitment to our program is noted. Overall this event ran very smoothly, especially considering all the other things happening on our campus that day. Thanks for making this happen!
Thanks also to those families and businesses that made generous donations of drinks, food, and supplies for this event. We appreciate everyone that contributes as they can to help provide for our programs.
This week’s schedule is based around all the performances this week, so please check it out carefully.
• Monday night is the District Drum Line/Color Guard showcase at the Marina HS gym at 6:30. This event is free. We encourage all not in DL or CG to come and watch and support these fun ensembles!
• Thursday night is our APA FANFARE concert at 7:00 in the Auditorium. Tickets are available thru the APA office. Again, we encourage our students and families not performing in this event to come watch and support these music ensembles.

BAND:
Thanks again to the dedicated Band students/families that helped on Saturday! Many of you bring your experience of helping at these while others are learning. You are why we are able to make these events run smoothly.
• The Band is opening the Prom Assembly held at lunch in the amphitheater on Thursday. You’ll be dismissed from your 3rd period class at 10:45. We’ll play pep tunes to open the assembly, then you’ll be released for lunch. Please wear black band t-shirts. And yes, we expect everyone to attend. If you’re unable to leave you class (exam, etc) please bring a note from your teacher to Mr. G.

ORCHESTRA:
It’s FANFARE week! This concert features all our large instrumental ensembles, Select Wind Ensemble, and Festival Orchestra. Let’s have a great show!
Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 we have 30 minutes to move percussion, keyboards, and stands into the auditorium.
The dress/tech rehearsal begins at 5:30 with Act 2, then Act 1, both in order:
ACT 2
Select Wind Ensemble
Festival Orchestra
ACT 1
Percussion
Pianos 1
Woodwinds
Brass
Saxes
Pianos 2
Strings
Students may leave after their last ensemble they play in.
• We would like students in the audience for this rehearsal, being prepped on on the side of the stage 1 ensemble before you enter the stage.
• For the concert, our “green room” will be M-1. The black box is being used. Students will be in the Music Bld until it’s time for them to be on the side of the stage prior to entering the stage. Details will be discussed Wednesday night.
All students are expected to help strike after the concert. If everyone actively helps, it should only take about 15 minutes.
Concert dress standards for the performance on Thursday, please.
• After FANFARE, some students will be involved in the MMET show. Additionally there will be an opportunity for students to perform at our Seniors+ Music Recital on Tuesday, May 30th. This is an opportunity for our seniors to have a fun final recital performance, and other students that want to play. Sign-ups/interest forms will be available next week.

DRUM LINE:
• Monday night is the annual District Drum Line/Color Guard showcase at Marina HS’s gym.
We will load the trucks at 3:00, and leave about 4:00. We will fold the floors (all help from all schools) and load the truck after the performance – about 8:15. Then we need to return to HBHS and unload.
• This is a free event. so please invite your friends and families.
Friday’s rehearsal is in the gym. We will move down at 5:45. At the end of rehearsal, we will load the trucks for Saturday. Everyone please actively help so this goes quickly.
Saturday’s call time is 7:00am @ HBHS. Come dressed in your uniform. We want to leave by 7:30 (if not sooner).

JAZZ BANDS:
This week’s schedule is modified due to the other performances. Monday’s JBB rehearsal is during DL truck loading. Let’s try to get some things accomplished, even if some have to help load. We’ll make it work. Our other rehearsal is Friday afternoon. Attendance is important!
• The District Jazz Festival at OVHS is scheduled next Friday 5/5. Details to follow.
• The Coronado Jazz Festival is Saturday, May 6th. This is our biggest festival, and a fun tradition for our program. It will include adjudicated performances and a salt-and-pepper clinic with San Diego State’s jazz band. We’ll then relax together and head to downtown San Diego for a dinner together. More details to follow, but as of now, students are asked to pay $30 for the dinner.
